Work Starts on High Street
Work has resumed on the Tram Extenstion.
The tracks are being laid on High Street in the City Mall, eventually leading all the way to Litchfield Street.

Mayor Officially Opens City Mall
The new-look pedestrian and shopping precinct was officially opened today by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker. To celebrate the refurbishment of the Cashel Mall, rides on a Horse Drawn tram, for a gold coin donation will run until 23 December 2009.

The special work and curved rails are here!
The new Diamond Crossing and grooved rail for the 1.6 km Christchurch Tramway extension has arrived and been laid. The tram extension is part of the City Councils plan to rejuvenate the inner city with a target of having 40,000 residents living inside the four avenues which will add to the vitality of Christchurch.

Long Term Council Community 2009-2019 Plan
The Council on 30th June 2009 decided to extend the city tramway, with the first stage to the corner of High and Tuam Streets to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011.
The proposal to extend the city tram route was included in the draft Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) 2009-19, released for Public consultation in March.
The Council approved the proposal to extend the route as far as the intesection of High Street and Tuam Street by 2011 to open in time for the Rugby World Cup in september/October of that year, and confirmed the funding for the second stage of the extension along High Street and Ferry Road to the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, the Music Centre of Christchurch and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) to be completed by the summer of 2013. Funding of $11.5 million is set aside in the LTCCP to achieve this.
The route selected for the tram extension fits with the Council's strategy to revitalise the Central City, linking destinations north and south of Cathedral Square. The tram is expected to attract more development in the up-and-coming area in the Central City South.
Ninety public submissions were received on the proposed tram extension, with 65 of those in support of the project. Further consultation will be carried out on specific parts of the route as design details are finalised. The project team will liaise with those affected by construction.
The firist stage of the extended route turns south at Worcester Boulevard, heading down Oxford Terrace, through City Mall and south-east along High Street, turning north into Colombo Street toward the Square to meet the existing line behind the Cathedral.
Stage two travels further south-east along High Street from Tuam Street, past the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, with details yet to be confirmed, then along St Asaph Street and Barbadoes Street as far as the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

Colombo Street closure allows tram tracks to be laid
Colombo Street was closed over the Easter break so tram tracks could be laid by the Project City Mall team.

Special public consultation for allowing trams in City Mall
The Christchurch City Council initiated a public consultation to provide for trams in the City Mall as it gears up for a wider consultation to extend the tramway in central city.
